Ladies and gentlemen there's a film with black folks leading, that isn't a historical film, that I actually want to see. Not just because black folks are in it and I therefore feel compelled to watch, but because it actually seems funny! And on top of that, the lead female resembles me! She has her natural hair, of dark complexion and skinny!! Okay, I'm leaving out the fact she acts like a nut case (please note I haven't been like that for about 10 years. LOL)

It is refreshing to see a female who isn't the typical mainstream beauty on the big screen. I just wish this wasn't even a conversation point. But until we see a broader range of brown people on the TV... I will jump on my soap box.

Not sure why I added this picture... I just like it.

The first week of 2012 is almost over and I've already managed to break a few of my new year resolutions. This year I thought I won't share them so then I wouldn't be accountable to anyone. But guess what, I even struggle to be accountable to myself!

So here I am sharing a few things I want to do this year. So now I'm accountable to you lot!

1. Eat less meat and more veg. I'll try to share a vegetarian dish once a month.
2. Go to the gym more often. Virgin Active are currently taking my money every month and I go once in a blue moon.
3. Start a small group. For those of you who are not familiar with this term it's basically a group of people/friends who get together weekly to strengthen each other spiritually.
4. Have morning devotion. I will do my best to share my devotion moments.
5. Stick to a clothes budget and buy more pre-loved items. I'll share my vintage finds.

I really hope I can stick to this small list of things!

Bring on week 2. Hopefully I can do better.

So the new year is upon us and it's time to say farewell to 2011.

I returned back from Copenhagen at the top of the year, with a wealth of life experience which had shaped my thinking and prepared me for 2011. Even though everything hasn't gone perfectly this year, I can still say I had a awesome year!

I've been blessed with good physical and mental health
All my immediate family is healthy and alive
I'm still as close as ever to my best friends
I have a new kitten in my life who is hilarious
My spiritual life is on the up
I've learn't new things about myself
I dated my dream man and realised it wasn't all it cracked up to be, and was alright with it!! (trust me that showed me how much growing I've done)

Got a new job at an agency with heart - big up the Brothers and Sisters
Touched down in Ghana, Africa
Found out my true calling

And if the world ends 2012, I can say for once in my life. I'm ready,why, because of Christ!

I pray that anyone who reads this has a 2012 full of great experience and growth

Just wanted to share a few things that made me laugh in Ghana.

Nice looking guy... oh wait... why is he wearing sandals. This happen maybe once or twice. We went out in the evening caught someone's eye....looked down to see either dusty sandals... or patent Birkenstocks. Please if the place has aircon and you're not wearing shorts and a T shirt, then put some whole shoes on!!

Your accent is African, but as soon as you hear we are from the UK it changes to a Bronx or Southern American accent. Erm this makes no kinda sense to me.... none!!!

Harlots aka Prostitutes. I never understand why in every part of the world harlots look like this?

Africans don't play when it comes to punishment. All I know is that if I was raised in Africa there are certain things I wouldn't have done and gotten away with. An African mother knows how to give our punishment. Lets just say someone in the home I was staying in, tried to lie about their whereabouts. The punishment was sleeping on the hallway floor (remember this isn't the UK with carpet) THE FLOOR for 10days, wake up at 4am do chores and then go to school!!! Mercy!

It's nice to be important, but it is more important to be nice. Africans have a saying for everything. This was the classic one.

SWEET GHANA

So it's been a long time...
... I've been chained to my 9-5 desk recently. I managed to clock up 70hrs in one week!

Anywho I broke free a couple weeks ago and went to Ghana with my friend Mex.

Having never been to Ghana I didn't know what to expect. I kind of thought... Caribbean, but on a larger scale and I wasn't far off.

Accra, the capital of Ghana is a fast paced city, with many highways, high rises and shopping districts, as you would expect to find in any big city. In fact they have an Oxford Street just like London. You can easily tell that it is a city which is growing at a rapid rate, with journey's that should last 20mins, taking up to 2hrs! Yes, 2 HOURS, thanks to the road developments currently taking place. However, this is probably the only thing I can find fault with.

Ghana has loads to see and do. Beaches, nice hotels, good food, culture, night life and high life! If you have never been to Africa I think Ghana is a good place to start.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to go to an event called Get To Know, hosted by Soul Marketing, a partner of BET networks in the UK. In previous years they have brought many entertainers over from the US to introduce them to the UK media and the special guest this year was Tracee Ellis Ross. If I had to break down the doors to get in I would have, however thank God I have friends in 'great' places and I got an invite.

The evening was an opportunity for her to talk about her career so far, and also her new venture as lead female and producer on BET's new show Reed Between The Lines . Check out the interview & highlights below:

It's been almost a year since I got back form Denmark, and since then I've found it really hard to find a church where I can grow spiritually in freedom. True freedom. Somewhere where there are frank discussion, open and honest conversation. Where leaders are really willing and brave enough to try new things, and make mistakes, in the knowledge that God is forgiving, merciful and overall loving.

It's been one of the most frustrating years in terms of my spiritual growth. I need to get a grip of the situation and seek for a place where I can grow or maybe I need to start something new.

FOR WHERE TWO OR MORE ARE GATHER IN MY NAME, I AM AMONGST THEM.

Don't need a building for it to be church.

Eric Roberson - Mister Nice Guy Tour Review

Yes I went to my 5 Eric Roberson gig in 3 years!! I think that qualifies me as an avid follower, right?

Last nights concert may have been my favourite, purely for selfish reasons. He sang all my fave songs and in his improvisation bit, he used my word 'Saltfish' to make up a song (I'll post this video soon). It was a tune! I think he should re-release MNG and add it as a bonus track.

I haven't really got much more to say, except for 'If you haven't been to an Erro concert, what are you doing with your life??'

Review: The MOBOs

Year after year I watch in the hope that the MOBO awards show will get better... But every year it gets worse. It feels as if I watching my end of school year talent show.

Here my list of things that just baffled me.

1. Jason Derulo. Who told anyone he could present an award show. The guy can just about mime his own lyrics, then add dancing. Jesus take the wheel!!!

2. Poor production values. Why am I seeing production assistants in shots? Is there a good reason as to why the mics are not working. Who is the sound guy? Is he or she on work experience? The stage just look dirty and scratched up. Why didn't they buff it?

3. Budget dancers. One fell down during Jason Derulo's performance that is all I have to say

4.The round tables. Please get rid of those round tables. People are just walking around like they are at a family wedding.

5. Dappy and Tychy Strider. Who thought that was a good idea? WHO???

6. The guys on roller skates. Those tricks were wack and time consuming.

I know I seem vex over an award show, but i just hate when things are so poorly done.

Relationships: How secure are you?

Relationships can teach you alot about yourself,but sometimes there are things you need to know about yourself before you getget into a one.

The worse thing you can do is get into arelationship whilst being insecure. This goes for both men and women!

As women we are all have things that we may beinsecure about, like my feet are too big or is my but is too small (as a blackwoman this a real concern). But these are not the kind of insecurities that canreally affect the course of a relationship.

Sometimes as women we don’t give ourselves enoughtime to recover from a bad relationship, which may have knocked our confidenceand consequently made us insecure. We then carry these issues (baggage) fromone relationship to another;

Becomingneedy within the new relationship
Haveunreasonably high expectations on the new partner to repair the damage done bysomeone else.
Allowthe new guy to treat you badly, because you don’t feel worthy of better

I could probably write a list 10 bullet pointslong, but these are the main issues I think can affect a potentially greatrelationship. And I’ll explain why.

Being needy is never a good look. I don’t think I’mthe expert on all men, but in my experience a SECURE guy appreciates anindependent female. When I say independent I don’t mean the independent femalethat Destiny’s Child sings about, the male bashing kind… I don’t condone thatnon-sense. To me an independent female (in the context of dating) is someonewho has her own life, outside of the relationship. Someone who isn’t dependingon the boyfriend to make her life immediately complete.

The danger of becoming too needy is that you caneasily be manipulated. If a guy figures you’re a needy type, he knows all hehas to do to get what he wants from you is distances himself, and you’ll comerunning or even do what you think you need to do to ensure he doesn’t godistant again.

Or if he is a ‘good’ guy, he’ll become distantbecause, all normal balanced people need their space!

Every woman is guilty of having crazy expectationsfrom time to time, but the worst thing a woman can do is make Mister New Guy payfor the debts of the old dude.

So many women let their guys do pure foolishness,almost as if they are the last man on earth. All you’re doing is destroyingyourself, and allowing the guy to think it’s OK to treat women in that way. Sothe next relationship he gets into, guess what, he’ll try doing the same thing…and it seems like these days, more and more females are just having it!!

Ladies, if you know you’re insecure, the worsething you can do is start a new relationship for security. Relationships withhuman beings are risky. People, even the ones who love you, can do things thatwill hurt, sometime even unintentionally. You need to be secure in yourself, soyou are able to see things in perspective, to not get hurt so deep that youfind it hard to recover, and also so you can have healthy relationships.

Sunday Dinner: Jerk Sea bass on a bed of lentils

I love cooking, but sometimes my lazy gene kicks in and cannot be bother! But today I was on it like sonic, I have a mission to put on weight for the winter, so I decided to cook sunday dinner.

On the menu, Jerk Sea bass (fillets) on a bed of puy lentils, with new potatoes and fine beans.

Ingredients

Sea bass fillets
Puy lentils
New Potatoes
Fine beans
Yellow & red peppers
Jerk seasoning paste
Lime
shallots
spring onions
2 cloves of garlic
Olive oil

Method

1. Season the sea bass with salt & peppers. Then with approximately 1tsp jerk seasoning paste, cover the fillet. Squeeze lime over the fish and leave for about 30minutes in the fridge.

2. Cut the new potatoes into halves, drizzle some olive over them and put into the oven (150 degrees) for 30mins.

3. In a hot pan, pour in a tbs of olive oil, add 1 chopped shallot and a crushed garlic clove. Wait until the onion begin to caramelise, then add in 2 cups of puy lentils. Sir for about 2 minutes then add 300ml of cold water. Bring to the boil for 10minutes, then leave to simmer for 20mins.

4. Whilst the lentils are cooking. Take the fish out of the fridge. Place the fish into a hot pan with a little oil, fry on each side for 3 minutes, on medium heat. Take the heat of the heat, add chopped peppers to the pan, and place the pan in the oven (150 degrees) for 15minutes

5. Place the fine beans into 100ml of water and boil for 5 minutes.

Review: Eric Roberson New Album 2011

Sunday morning was a great one! I did house work whilst jamming to Eric Roberson's new album. Good music always makes the most menial of tasks enjoyable.

This album, musically carries on from where the Music Fan First album left off - clever hip hop samples and simple melodies are used in the opening tracks 'MISTER NICE GUY' & 'STRANGERS'. Eric's soulful voice just makes me happy and lets not forget the lyric content. Thank God there are still people writing quality songs like PICTURE PERFECT (which will be added to my 'if only' playlist).

I've also got to thank Eric for 'Male Ego' and 'Try Love' I know a few brothers that need to hear those lyrics.

My favourite tracks have to be 'Come With Me' which makes me smile from ear to ear and 'Shake Her Hand', which is a great story as well as a good piece of advice for all men.

REVIEW: STEVIE WONDER TRIBUTE - ERIC ROBERSON, OMAR & Co

Autumn is officially here and the nights are drawing in. It was the last bank holiday of the summer, so I made sure I made the most of it.

My weekend was filled with friends, family and Stevie Wonder. Well not the man himself but his music. On Sunday night a host a great artists paid homage to Mr Wonder (by the way he is still alive). Eric Roberson (my fav), Omar, Janet Kay, Caroll Thomson & Roachford sang their favorite Stevie hits.

Eric was the host/MC for the night and he did a fab job! I would really like to know what other job this man could have, apart from being an entertainer?! I'm so glad he found his calling and followed the dream. Can you imagine if he didn't and just ended up being an IT guy or something regular?? It would be a damn shame! But to be deadly serious, Eric was a great host, and on top of that he sang my favourite Stevie songs - Send one your love (which happens to be in my 'if I ever' play list) and Do I Do.

Another great moment of the night was Roachford. Now I don't know if you remember him from the late 80s, but I did some research on YT, and it all came flooding back! Two words Double Denim! Anyhow, he was AWESOME!! Seriously good!!

Omar was OK... I don't want to be negative, because the man is an incredible artist, but OPEN YOUR EYES INNIT... MAYBE SAY HELLO, I'M OMAR AND I'M HAPPY TO BE HERE.. the man never said a word, him just com pon di stage and sing him song, and gone... mercy me!

All in all it was a great night. The two lovers rock songstresses didn't really do it for me, I prefer to hear them sing in their genre, but it was good to have variety.

After the concert I did a lil dancing with the girls...chatted briefly with Mr Eric (thought I'd just drop that in there). The guy is lovely. He spent about 10 minutes showed us pictures of his wife and child, who by the way is cuuuuttttteeee! Got to love a man, who loves his family! And if you didn't know his new album is out Sept 3rd and UK concert is October 15th @ Indigo O2. See you there!

Kelly Has The X-Factor

X-FACTOR is back and my life is once again complete (slight exaggeration but you know what I mean).
Auditions are my favourite part. I know it's bad, but I love seeing those awful acts who have totally loss touch with reality. However, yesterday I wasn't paying any attention to the acts, I was too busy watching Kelly Rowland. She is officially my girl crush '11.

She looked amazing and I'm just so happy to see a brown face on prime time TV.

Hair Update

It's been a while since I've posted anything with regards to my hair, so I thought I'd give you an update.

The bad
I suffered some breakage after my heat straightening. It's weird as it only broke in one place and not all over. So I'm thinking it may have been a styling thing whilst it was straight. The result is I have a patch of hair which is less than and inch long :-( SAD TIMES. I momentarily wanted to cut my hair all off and start again, but I'm OK and I'm living with it!

My hair is growing slowly, or it's breaking. Either way I've seen little growth over the summer. I think it maybe down to stress at work and or styling. Because of laziness I've been wearing puffs and ponytails. I haven't done protective style in months.

The good
After the heat straightening my hair returned to it full curly/ kinky self. There was no heat damage, thank God.

My curl pattern has changed. It was real mix bag of curl patterns when I first started my journey and I find it's more our less the same all over - 4B.

Next Step
More protective styling including a potential winter weave. Excited!

90's not so great Mary

My friend found some really old and dodgy pictures of us when we were 15-18. These were some not so great days for me. I was still finding myself, that's the only excuse I can give for looking the way I did.

The hair

Who remembers JAM & Pink (which was in fact brow) gel? After school my friends and I would group around the mirrors in the girls bathroom, slicking down hair to our foreheads. Then once flat we'd take the end of a comb and shape 'S' shapes into the glued down fringe. I'm surprised some of us still have hair on our heads.

Lets not forget the fact we'd have about 10 different hairstyles going on in one head. Cornrows in the front, bantu knots in the middle, ringlets down the side, and two pony tails in the back. And if you were allowed, a bandanna in there somewhere.

Before I had money for MAC or Bobbi Brown, I had to use Sleek. Yes Sleek, better known as coloured chalk! You would think a make-up brand for black skin would do better, but NO! They had me looking like casper the ghost! Thank God, my mum wasn't too keen on make-up wearing, so I rarely wore it!

Please tell me I wasn't the only one who wore black lip liner with silver or red lipstick (again a Sleek favourite) Who said that was cool??? WHO?? Some one must be responsible for that travesty!

And how about beauty spots? I never thought it was a cool thing to draw on your face, but I do remember I few people would! So not cool!

The Fashion

KTS, MARK ONE, TIME AND BAY TRADING were responsible for my massive fashion mistakes in the 90's, plus I had a mum who thought the only fashion items I should have was my school uniform! After my blazer cost 150 UK POUNDS, she wasn't going to be handing over cash for expensive fashion items. I must admit I was lucky... every month I received a clothes allowance, once my grades were good. However, Eisenegger was as name brand as it got (only those in the UK would know about that place, always on sale)

I dare you to look at your 90's photos and you'll ask yourself the same question. What was I thinking??

It's raining purple!

I got to see one of my favourite artists of all time. PRINCE!!

On Wednesday morning I spoke to my friends in Copenhagen who mentioned Prince was in town for the weekend doing a series of shows. Well by Thursday I had booked my ticket and flight, and by Friday evening I was on a flight out of Stanstead to Copenhagen.

Most of the weekend I was quite subdued, I don't think the reality of seeing Prince had hit me yet, but by Sunday morning (the day of the concert) I was hyped and ready to see Prince and Co. Oh yes, I forgot to mention that this was Prince featuring Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Chaka Khan, Raphael Saadiq & Janelle Monae. Could you get a better line up?? I think not!

We arrive at the open air venue and headed straight to the front, and there I stayed from 3pm - 10pm!

Janelle Monae was awesome, I much preferred seeing her at this event than at the Round House earlier. I think her performances needed a bigger stage.

Aunty Khan was her amazing screaming self! Only she can get away with not knowing the words to her own songs. She sang through all her hits and when we thought it couldn't get any better Prince came out and sang Sweet Thang... oh that man. I know he is only 4ft nothing, but he has some serious sex appeal. I don't understand... I think he has special powers! Maybe it's those pretty eyes (and eyeliner. lol)

After the Prince & Chaka moment I could have gone home, it was already an amazing concert! However I would have been mad, because the man, the symbol, The Artist formerly known as Prince, was on next.

Prince started of by doing a 15 minute sound check, which was amazing, there was no 1...2... testing testing. He sang through a couple funk hits, whilst playing the drums, 3 guitars, electric piano and his purple grand piano. Who does that!!!? A... MAZ..ING!

BEST MOMENTS

Little Red Corvette. So during this song I'm convinced (and so were the people surrounding me) that Prince had pointed at me. However, now that I've had time to think about this epic moment, I'm not sure how I should have felt about it.... the song is about a girl who is a little bit too fasssssst. Anywho check it out below.

Purple Rain. Prince made it rain purple. Yep, purple rain (Purple confetti) fell from the clouds. It was EPIC.

So you'd think after 2hrs of singing, Prince would be tired, but oh nooooo....
... we received a text saying Prince would be doing an intimate jam session for a few100 fans at a venue nearby. So even though my feet were aching, my back sore and my belly was rumbling for food. We headed down to Amager Bio (Copenhagen's answer to Jazz Cafe). Wasn't to sure if he'd really appear, but after 2 hrs of waiting we were let inside, and we weren't let down. Prince and the New Power Generation played some classic funk and soul hits, way into the daylight hours.

My Prince weekender was so epic! I'm so happy I went, and even though my bank balance is battered... it was worth every penny.

If you ever get the opportunity to see him, get a ticket. You will not regret it!

THOUGHTS: What is romance?

I've been having a couple discussions recently about romance. And as I spoke I started to wonder... what is romance! I know I should know, I'm a female after all... but I don't think I know! My past relationship haven't been that romantic. There may have been romantic moments (I think), but nothing from a Mills &Boons novel.

I'd like to think I don't need romance to feel loved or appreciated. I shouldn't need grand gestures. But then I sometimes have moments when I day dream of what it would be like to be swept of my feet. So what is that about?? Should I sue Walt Disney for my sense of disappoint when it doesn't happen. Probably not, but you can see the danger of being a girl who dreams of romance. It just might not happen they way you dreamt it.

Then there's another question of why is someone being romantic...

Wikipedia say:

Romance is the pleasurable feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love.
In the context of romantic love relationships, romance usually implies an expression of one's love, or one's deep emotional desires to connect with another person.

There's one word that stands out to me when I read this description. LOVE. Romance blossoms out of LOVE. So what is romance without Love... Fake??

When a guy does all those 'romantic' things in the beginning stages of a relationship... what does it mean? Could he be showing signs of real emotion or possibly pretending to, in order to make you feel safe enough to let your guard down, and get his wicked way! This isn't what I necessarily think, but these are all things that have come up in my conversations.

I like most girls, like a little romance. But, more than that I'd want a guy to be genuine, and you can only know if someone is genuine when spending time with them. For me a romantic gesture comes from genuine emotion. It's a way of reminding someone that you're thinking about, care about or possibly love them.

Romance isn't a one way thing...sometimes you might need to show the person you're with how to you want to be romanced.

So in conclusion, I'm still a little bit confused. All I know is; don't play a Joe track and you'll be allllright!

Dear Ms Scott

I didn't even know you were working on a new album until I saw the So In Love video (by the way that song has been added to my if I ever get married play list). What a pleasant surprise to see you back doing what you do best. I mean, I love seeing you on the big and small screen, but you doing music is were you BELONG!!!

So Miss Scott, how do you write so honestly? How do you write an album that seems so personal but still, somehow mirrors some of the emotions and thought processes I go through. When I heard 'Hear my Call' for the first time, I cried. I know I've prayed that pray before. I know someone out there needs to say that prayer for themselves... so thank you for sharing it.

I doubt you'll ever see this letter, but if you do I want you to know that Lolly loves this album! It's a classic... honest lyrics, crazy music production and just plain ol' good music!

Sisters and business partners

After being natural for 18months one can get a little bit bored by the afro. So, I decided to go for a change and get my hair blown out and straightened. This is not an easy decision to make, with so many horror stories and girls having to cut all their hair off due to heat damage, I made sure I did my research.

With the NYC holiday on the cards I thought it made sense to get in done in New York.

I follow the fabulous Taren on twitter and her hair always looks fabulous curly or straight. She's alos a native New Yorker so I decided to contacted her on twitter regarding good hair salons in Manhatten. Within moments she responded with a boutique salon called GEORGIA. I went on to checked out their website and I was sold! Nothing beats a stylish and well thought through website. I booked by appointment and counted down to my trip.

My experience at Georgia was awesome. For starters it is more than a salon, they sell many natural hair and skin products including their own range Georgia by G & Company and a few cute accessories.

Kiara (Co-Owner) was there when we arrived, cheerful lovely lady and Jennifer the stylist arrived soon after.

The store has the finger prints of Jodie and Kiara , who happen to be sisters in-law, all over it. There are pictures of their family and people who have inspired them, hanging on the raw walls and cute girl pics and displays dotted around.

Jennifer, the stylist was very professional. You may think that is a weird thing to say, but for those of you who know about 'black' hairdressers, professionalism isn't a given. Jen understood my hair type and gave advice as to how I should care for it in the humidity of NYC.

Jen managed to wash, condition and straighten my hair and my friends hair in 3.5hours! She doesn't usually do two clients at once, but because we were on holiday she made an allowance.
Can I just say the results were fantastic. I have never had pressed hair before and I was sceptical abou how straight it would go, because it is quiet tightly curled in some places. But, my hair looked relaxed!! It was dead straight with not much effort.

I would definitely recommend Georgia to any natural headed sister in NYC... in fact I'd go to NYC just to get it done!

I've now washed my hair and it has returned to is bounce glorious self... NO heat damaged ends.

We were very full at this point

This could possibly be the sexiest restaurant/bar I've ever been to. The décor is stunningly trendy, screaming cool New York. The atmosphere in the restaurant was buzzing, helped by the rare grooves and old skool rnb classics playing in the background. I couldn't help raising my hand every time a tune was played. Apart from the cold reception from the hostess the waiting staff were great! Our waiter even made-up a veggie dish for my friend. Nothing was too much trouble for him.

I ordered a medium/ well fillet medallion with Brocollini and creamed potatoes sides. Everything was delicious! I mean, I'm dreaming about the food 5 days later! For dessert we shared a warm chocolate molten cake… A-MAZING!!

But the best dessert had to be the fair ground collection – cotton candy, pop corn and waffles

After dinner we were swiftly moved out of our table (it gets really busy on a Saturday night) so we moved on to the bar area. We stayed for a couple drinks (None alcoholic cocktails $7, cocktails $15) and because of the cute guys at the bar… well one cute guy because after close inspection I realised the other one was wearing mascara!!

I've wanted to go to Nobu London for ages, but never got round to it. But to be honest I'm glad I waited for the NYC experience. I only have a few things to say. Try the Tempura Sea Bass, melt in your mouth amazing! The only negative thing I have to say is the air con, it is no joke. Make sure you wear a jumper.

Tao - Asian Fusion

The best thing about this restaurant is the decor. The big Buddha water feature and the high ceilings make this an awesome place to dine, and the food is good too. If you don't want to fork out too much money, try their lunch special. The menu is reduced and so is the price.

Barrio Chino – Mexican

The most unassuming restaurant we went to. There was no sign or logo, not even a door. It looks like some has literally turned their front room into a restaurant…which is what makes it so charming. We were recommend to eat here by my friends new boo *cheeky grin* and it was a thumbs up. The best thing about this place is their house special guacamole, I could have left having eaten just that. It is super tasty!

The Miss Education of Lauyrn Hill maybe one of my all time favourite albums ever.
I remember playing 'Nothing Even Maters' about 10 trillion times. Looking through the album cover and singing/ rapping along to every song in my mirror. Those were the days when as a British black kid you wanted to be an African American kid. Those Americans were just so cool...

... anywho I loved Lauyrn and I still do. She is a little nutty, but that just makes her even cooler.
Her raspy voice, mismatching sense of style, the fact she went AWOL for over 10 years came back without an album and people still cant get enough, just proves how much SWAGGER she has!

I hope she releases something soon, but until then I will enjoy the timeless hits.

I wonder where they start the story? Is over 15 years on. Will they be Gran parents? However there are a few questions I wouldn't mind being answered.

Singleness... is it really a blessing??

I rarely do personal posts, but I've been thinking recently about this topic so I thought I'd share.

I've been single for a while now, two plus years. There's been some dates and a couple potentials, but nothing has developed. The person was either just a big fat no, bad timing or just not compatible. So two or so years on and I'm still without a significant other.

So how do I feel about it?

To be honest I'm OK... really I am!! I know you females don't believe me, but truly I'm OK. Notice I didn't say over the moon, but OK.

Not being in a relationship I think in most cases, has been a blessing and here's why:

Self development
I think I got into a serious relationship way too young. I'm not sure I knew what I was doing. When I look back I think some of the experiences really shaped me, sometimes into a really negative person. Being solo has allowed me to re-evaluate my life. Over the years I have grown up emotionally. I understand myself much better and what I can or cannot take. I also know what I deserve and what my potential suitor deserves from me. All the things I never thought about when I was 19.

Accepting yourself for who you are

If you're in a bad relationship you do alot of questioning. Questioning if you're good enough, pretty enough, pleasant enough, list goes on. And after a break up most females go through a period of blaming themselves. Time alone allows you to start loving yourself again. Not relying on someone else to give you value!

Improved spiritual life
I'll keep this one simple. When you're in a relationship those early morning and late night convos should be with your Lord and Saviour! lol!

More time
Not having a BF means having more time on your hands. FACT. With that time I've developed many skills that laid dormant for years - Baking, sewing, painting (don't laugh at me). I've lived abroad and done lots of traveling.

More money
I don't know about you but I enjoy buying gifts for those I love and a BF is no exception. I definitely think being solo has helped my bank balance.

So you see there are many blessing to being single. But I'm only human and of course I want a man in my life. However the right man... one that is perfect for me. I don't have a list anymore (yes, I use to have one) I've decided to throw that out, because I like surprises. How boring would it be to find a man that just ticked the boxes.

So Lord if you're reading my blog. Thanks for the years of my single blessing.

I’m forever in search an affordable shampoo & conditioner which actually really agrees with my hair and leaves it feeling clean but not stripped of all its natural goodness. It took me over 10years to find a good combination for my relaxed hair and just when I did, I decided to go natural.

I’ve tried all the go to brands, Giovanni Organic Hair care range, Carol’s Daughter and Miss Jessie’s – but they’re all very expensive, especially if you got a densely packed head of hair as I do. Hands up all the 4B sistahs!? You know a dime sized portion doesn’t do a thing for our strands, so finding a reasonable priced product is important!

Ladies and gentlemen I present to you, Naked Shine Hydrating Shampoo (with Honey & Marlow) 97% natural and only £4.07 for 250ml!

Likes: Inexpensive, smells good, lathers well, left my hair feeling clean but not stripped. My hair looked shiney

Dislikes: Not as hydrating as I would like, but better than amost shampoos in that price range

London is really a great place, but I only seem to get to go to all the cool places when people from out of town come to visit. This weekend my cousin and friend are in town from NYC, and we decided to go Brick Lane via Spitalfields market.

Spitalfields market is an indoor market with a mix between vintage & new designer stalls.You can find anything from fur coats to organic cookies. I find places like Spitalfields inspiring. All sorts of people with many different talents selling and sharing their passions with the world. It makes me want to get off my procrastinating backside and JUST do all things I dream of. One day soon... watch this space.

Brick Lane is fantastic for food, such a wide varity, with flavours to make your mouth water. If it wasnt for the fact I had a large breakfast I think I may have eaten everything in sight. If you're into vintage shopping this is also the place for you. However I must say vintage prices are on the rise, so bargains are hard to come by. Also, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to rummage. If you end up in a store like Beyond Retro, you could be there for hours, without realising it.

GET ME Janlle Monae: Concert Review

Miss Janelle Monae...

...I've been following her for the last couple of years now (that sounds like I'm a stalker, lol). I mean I've been following her career. I love her creativity, her story telling and fantasy. She has all the element of a great long lasting entertainer.

So last night I went to see Miss JM. Originally I was meant to go with fellow fabulous blogger & friend HarlemLoves, but she was poorly (get well soon Harlem). So I bullied a friend into going with me. Who knew it would be so hard to find people to go out with on week night!

The show opened (@ the Round House, Camden) with with her up-tempo songs from the début album: Archandroid. It was a shame, but the sound was really bad. I couldn't hear a word and I was right next to the speakers. The sound guy needs a beating!

After the up-tempo section was over she sang the Charlie Chaplin classic - Smile. It was beautiful, stunning, probably my favourite part of the show. Her vocal ability is jut amazing. For such a little thing, she can saaannnng. But after that I zoned out a little. I decided it was probably do to the fact I couldn't see much. Having arrived late, I was at the side of the stage glimpsing Janelle Monae's signature hairstyle (which I months away from achieving in my own hair) over the speakers. I decided to make a dash for the other side to see if I could get a better view of the stage, but it was no better. However I did get a view of Bruno Mars and Estelle sitting above me (this is what happens when you don't go VIP, oh how the mighty have fallen. See my Usher review).

On stage were some strange go-ings ons *Americanism*. I didn't quite get the whole metropolis theme... I mean I understand the link with her album, but I don't think it worked on stage. If anything it, freaked me out a little. It felt a little like a stage school's final production. Maybe it would have worked in a better venue or a bigger stage. But to my 'untrained' eye it looked a tad make-shift plus it distracted me. I spent alot of time trying to work it all out. At one point, Janelle and her androids managed to get everyone to sit on the floor, YES THE BEER DAMP FLOOR! Not me, yes I was a joy killer, me and a few other sensible people who didn't want to catch rabies in their va jay jay! Yes, I did just say that!

At another point in the show she started painting, what appeared to be a bottom, or maybe a tulip. Either way she gave the picture away to Kwaku, who was celebrating his birthday. I hope I don't see it on ebay today!

I feel like I'm being such a moaning cow. I did enjoy some parts - for instance my other favourite part of the show was 'Tightrope'. I did shake my groove thing, and miss Janelle shook so much, her hairstyle started to fall apart. Now that is dedication. Another black artist would have shut the show down, and cancelled! Serious talk.

I really want to love her, and I do, but there something, something I can't yet put my finger on. Would I see her again? Probably! I'll give her the benefit of the doubt, that the venue and sound design didn't lend it's self to her great talent. She really gave a performance and I really wish I got to see it from the front and not the side. Next time I'm getting my backside there early.

Mostly everyone has an iPhone now... except for my mum, who's phone still has a green screen (bless her). iPhones are a great addition to my life, I know that might sounds crazy, but it's true, everything is avaliable at my fingertips, I couldn't imagine life without it.

One great blessing of the iPhone has to be the great apps avaliable, especially apps for your soul. Daily Devotions, Bible Studies, Podcasts and Videos. Here are a few of my favourites;

GET ME NITES: Saturday Nite Boogie

Last night me and a couple ladies when out for dinner and a shake a leg, and what a fun night we had! There's not many places I'd venture to for a night out. But when I came across a night call Saturday Nite Boogie @ Market Place - strickly 80's, rare grooves and funk. I had to be there! Market Place has a resturant upstairs and a bunker down below, where the night is held. The crowd was a great mix of London's muticultural and eclectic 20 & 30 sumthing. There were no bad attitudes, everyone was just there to reminisce and dance to some fantasic tunes. For those of you, who are bored of the raving scene and current state of mainstream music this is the night for you. Don't bother wearing heels, wear your best dancing shoes.

GET ME USHER: The review

Back in the 90s Usher was headlining at Ally Pally (Alexandra Palace) and as hormonal teeny bopper I begged mum to let me go... and all I got was a BIG FAT NO! I don't think she realised that at the time I thought Usher was going to be my husband. Anywho, I'm glad she didn't, who knows what kind of effect that concert would have had on me.

So 14years on and I've finally seen 'Usher Babbbyyy' at the O2 (much better than dingy Ally Pally) and on top of that I recieved VIP treatment. I don't think I could ever watch a concert as a regular person again!

*Spolier alert*
OMG show opened with Usher jumping out from the middle of the arena, then elevating over the crowed back to the stage in a very MJesq way. The crowd went wild, whilst I was munching on potato wedges (food is my delight). He then danced and "0ooo weee" himself through a few uptempo songs from the Here I stand album, took us through the ol skool R&B hits of the 90s (I still remember all the lyrics) , asked Michael Jackson if he had permission to fill his shoes ( MJ should have returned from the grave to give a slap for that), serenaded a 'random' super fan who resembled one of the 16year old girls from C4's Gypsy Wedding, bared his fine chest for 'Confessions' and 'Let it Burn' - one of my favourite moments, God forgive me, then he ended with his hits from OMG.

Usher's talent is undenialble - FACT. He's a good dancer and his vocals held up well. But he just seemed to be going through the motions - he didn't have the all consuming, star presences I expected from a superstar.

I left the O2 in my VIP Mercades (sorry I had to throw that in) less than impressed... maybe I'm getting old...maybe it's because the arena is just too big... who knows??

Overall it was a good night out - food, drink, comfy seat and great company.

It's 1 month into 2011 and I feel like I've been here before. And, yes I have been here before, but I made it through. I'm not sure what lessons I have to learn but there must be one.

If you're having a trying 2011 so far, dwell on these wise words:

A GET ME LOLLY SUNDAY

Had a lovely Sunday this weekend. Minus having to by a new tyre for my car, which set me back £75 (It hurts just to type that)!

I had brunch with one of my BFFs at the Breakfast Club (Hoxton). If you're not aware of this restaurant/cafe, you need to get to know! Comfort food served all day long. I had a Veggie Pancake Breakfast (£8) and my friend had pancakes(£6). If you go on a Sunday you will have to queue. We were out in the cold for about 20mins, but it was worth the wait (they don't take table bookings over the weekend)

After brunch I headed to Clapham to get my toes eaten by Fish aka Piscean Pedicure. The spa is called Anesis Fish Spa, it is very well designed and quite plush inside. The staff were very nice and chatty.The only down side was how cold I was, they could do with putting up the heating.
The pedicure itself was a strange experience, it felt like I was being tickled and nibbled at the same time. Result wise my feet felt softer, but not as good as they would have felt with a regular pedicure. For £50 I don't think I'd do it again, but it definitely worth a try!

2010 was good, but I'm hoping to make 2011 better. Who's with me??

I haven't really been on my bloggin' 'game' in recent weeks... Sorry, but I've been on holiday in the West Indies... Jealous? I would be :-P

Anywho, I'm back to the cold UK in less than 48hrs and hoping to hit the ground running. Nuff tings to be doin', you get me?? (Excuse the ghetto speak lol)

Normal bloggin' to resume at the weekend, once I sleep off the jetlag.

I don't remember how I came across this video but it is a great lesson to us all.

Singer song-writer, NeYo, didn't come out of the womb a singer and this video is proof. But, what it does show is that after being booed off the infamous Apollo stage in Harlem, he must have gone away and done some serious practising and thank God he did!!!

Please beware of the Sisqo like hair, strange stage names, bad vocals and unnecessary body rolls. LOL!

GET ME LIVE: SWV

I love going to live gigs, especially to see the artists who I never had the oppotunity to see when I was younger. So this weekend (thanks to my best friends) I went to see Faith & SWV at Indigo O2.

First and foremost I must shout out the DJ on the night - Adam I think his name was. I was taken back 10years, tune after tune... I even brought out some old skool moves in salute.

... OK so back to the show. SWV came out first, despite having lost their luggage and having a hectic time getting to the venue, they sounded great...especially Coko. Coko's voice is still the same, even better I'd say. Taj kept things hyped, she seemed very happy to still be performing....aww bless her cotton socks. And Lelee, well she did her thing... I can't hate.

Every woman in the crowd sang along to every single line, of every single song. I didn't realise I knew the lyrics so well. Of course I almost lost my voice singing 'weak' but stopped short at the ad-libs, I didn't want to em brassed myself.

All in all it was a sweet but short performance from SWV - only 30mins - but great!

I'm not sure if I should say anything about Faith's 50min set. I'll stick to, if I have nothing good to say, then I'll say nothing at all.

It was a great night and I always enjoy seeing artist at Indigo - its a good venue.

Look out for SWVs new album late 2011.

AUDIBLE DELIGHTS: NeYo

After NeYo performed on the AMA, I was impressed by the quality of music and the concept. So I treated myslef to the Album - Libra Scale. It has some serious classics, and I for one love it. 'Champagne Life' is my JAM , it's been on repeat most of the day.

If you buy this ablum be warned, you may think its Michael Jackson singing from the grave. Maybe Teddy Riley wasn't lying and MJ is still alive! LOL. Or maybe this was an album recorded for MJ, but he never got a chance to record it. Who knows!?

GET ME HAIR: Protective styling

Oh winter is here, and my poor hair is literally breaking down!! I made a big mistake...
1/Blow dried my hair - The lack of moisture cause sevre dry strands.
2/ Wore it out in a puff - All though it was a mighty good looking puff, in sub zero temperatures, my hair froze and snapped.
3/ Didn't add enough water to my hair.

So after these mistakes I knew I had to make some serious changes to my hair regime. The number one thing was to protect my hair with either a 'quick weave' or a style where my ends would be tucked away. Also, add moisture to my hair during the day [water with a few drops of your favourite leave in conditioner added, in a spray bottle] and use a heavy duty oil to seal in the moisture [my favourite is shea butter with coconut oil]

Having natural hair exposed in the winter is really NOT an option, especially if you live in a cold country. So it's farewell to puffs for the next few months, unless there is a really special reason, and hello to protective styles.

November 2010

Yesterday was my last Cafe Kirken Crew Sabbath experience (I know that is a mouthful). Well not forever, I'm sure I'll be back to visit, atleast. But it was the last time in this chapter of my journey.
It was a fantastic church service. Suzanne's (fab singer, choir director, pray warrior & professional happy person) choir rocked the house and Pastor Bobby gave a short word. The best part of the day for me was singing the song 'I am a friend of God' by Israel Houghton - For the first time in a long time I really felt like a friend of God. And that feeling is thanks to my journey here in CPH.

After church we went to Cafe Konjak - back to the place where I had the first Church Cafe crew experience. Then we headed over to the infamous Henrik's apartment ( Through the red light district, I got lost). As usual there was laughter, penguins (you'll have to go to understand) and loads of tea & coffee.

I have just over a week left in CPH , I'm trying not to jump ahead of myslef or worry about London, but I'm going to enjoy every moment I have left.

WHAT'S COOKING: Meatballs & Spaghetti

If like me in winter all you want to do is curl up on the sofa and eat comfort food. Then this recipe is for you!

You'll need:
500g of mince beef (good quality)
40ml of olive oil
1 finely red onion
2 finely spring onions
2 cloves of garlic
1 egg
1 jar of pasta sauce (a quality brand like)
2 tbsp white flour
tsp of all purpose seasoning
tsp of curry powder
Pinch of black pepper and salt
3 Tomatoes
Fresh Parsley
Whole grain spaghetti

1/ In a bowl, using your hand mix together the mince, chopped onions, 1 glove of garlic seasonings and egg and flour. If it gets to messy use a metal spoon.

2/ Then take the mixture and make balls about 1 inches in diameter.

3/ Place balls on to a flat dish and put into the fridge for about 30mins

4/Fry the balls in olive oil for until brown.

5/ In a pan, fry of garlic and and chopped freshed tomatoes, salt and pepper, then add pasta sauce. All the sauce starts to boil add the cooked meatballs and leave to simmer for 20mins.

6/ Boil pasta - Al dente

Serve and enjoy

Brother Man, what have you got in your closet?

It has come to my attention that Copenhagen has got some of the best dressed men in the WORLD! Honestly, I'm constantly breaking my neck *cheeky grin* check out my CPH FW post if you don't believe me.

Anywho seeing all these well dressed men has got me thinking. What are some of the mens 'must haves'.Not just for this season, but for life!

Here is my list:

1/ A good pair of everyday shoes (NOT AIR FORCE ONES or TNs) & a pair of smart black shoes (I personally prefer a good pair of brogues or boots)
2/ A fitted white shirt
3/ A pair of straight/ relaxed/ classic - dark denim please.
4/ A good suit - Zara have some great ones straight of the peg. If you want to spend a little more, Paul Smith and if you're goning to splash out, Ozwald Botang.
5/Woollen Coat (double breasted always looks good)
6/V neck cardians or jumpers (Only wear polo neck jumpers if you're over a certain height, otherwise you'll look shorter)

For a man it is all about the cut and fit. This doesnt mean you have to spend bucks, the high street has truely improved so a guy can look a million bucks for much less. Some of my faves are Reiss, Zara and Cos. I would avoid Pimarks and H&M for staple items, for two reasons, they'll probably fall apart in the wash and unless you are really skilled at 'mix & matching' then it WILL look budget. Sorry it's the truth.

WHAT NOT TO DO

1/ No male clevage t-shirts - This look actually makes me bring up my dinner. Why do I need to see the top of your pectorials??
2/Always wear socks with shoes. Yes, even in the summer!!
3/Football shirts should only be worn to matches, around the house or at sporting events. NEVER on a date.
4/Suit jackets worn as blazers. They are not the same thing... I can tell!
5/Items of clothing with holes in them. Throw it away, or atleast patch it up!

I'm in love!!! Not with a boy, that is overated!

I'm in love with Solange Knowles' style. From the top of her afro wig, down to her stylish foot fandangles (shout out to GM on the new word) Ms Solo is my fashion icon.

To some, her mis matching is hard on the eyes. To me it's as easy as a sunday morning, effortlessly chic!!

If she brought out a clothing line tomorow I'd cry, why? Because I'm poor, but I'd be happy for the rest of the world who'd be able to throw on a Solo O-rig-i-nal (Solange if you are reading this, I want a lil sumthing sumthing for the name idea!).

Solo knowles your fashion taste is amazing, and your beauty shines from inside out! By that I mean she's beautiful on the inside AND the outside.... not just the inside!!
